Axminster Rug Carpet "Vatican" Floral Rose Garlands 1914 design

Large Floral Axminster rug; 9 by 12 feet, 80% wool, 20% nylon. Dated 1966.

I was lucky to speak with someone who worked at the company where this lovely rug was made (T.F. Firth & Son) and was given some interesting background information about the rug's design. The head designer of the company was on a visit to Copenhagen where he was shown a rare collection of old sketches which their Danish agent found. Among them was an exceptional beauty dated June 26, 1914. The sketch was a design for a carpet that was hand woven by Jugoslav (Yugoslavian) craftsman I. Ginzkey for apartments of a French diplomat at the Vatican. It took the company nine months to translate the exquisitely drawn flowers and scrolls from artist's sketch for there are 54 colours involved and each tuft had to be drafted on to point paper. They called the design "Vatican".

This lovely carpet is approximately 9 by 12 feet and though in beautiful condition, it requires a good cleaning.
